Vastu for North Facing House: Tips for Wealth and Prosperity

North facing homes are considered highly auspicious in Vastu Shastra. Learn why, how to arrange rooms for maximum benefit, where to place water elements, and the mistakes to avoid.

Why North Facing Is Considered Auspicious in Vastu

North is one of the most celebrated directions in Vastu Shastra. Governed by Kubera — the deity of wealth and treasurer of the gods — the north direction carries associations with financial prosperity, career advancement, and the flow of positive opportunities into a home. This alone explains why north facing plots and apartments are often the most sought-after in markets influenced by Vastu thinking.

Beyond mythology, there is a practical dimension. In the northern hemisphere, a north facing entrance allows the morning sun to enter from the east side of the home and the afternoon sun from the west, without the harsh direct southern exposure. This creates naturally well-lit, temperate interior spaces — a feature prized in both ancient and contemporary architecture.

In classical Vastu texts, north is associated with the water element and with movement. A north facing home, when configured correctly, supports careers that involve communication, finance, trade, and the flow of ideas or money. It is particularly supportive for business owners, financial professionals, and those in creative or intellectual fields.

Room Arrangement for a North Facing Home

The benefits of a north facing home depend significantly on how the internal spaces are organised. Here is the optimal arrangement:

Main entrance: The north entrance is most auspicious when placed in the north's fifth pada — approximately the centre of the north wall, or slightly toward the northeast. This pada is associated with Kubera and is considered the peak of north's wealth-attracting power.

Master bedroom: The southwest corner is ideal. This is the zone of earth and stability, appropriate for rest and for grounding the household. The head of the bed should point south or east.

Living room: North or northeast works beautifully. These zones support openness, intellectual engagement, and the easy flow of positive social energy.

Kitchen: Southeast (the zone of fire) is the preferred location. Northwest is acceptable. The northeast should be avoided for kitchen placement, as it conflicts with the water energy of that zone.

Study or home office: North or northeast is excellent for work that requires focus, intellectual clarity, or financial analysis. The north's association with Kubera makes this zone supportive of wealth-generating activities.

Dining area: West or northwest is appropriate. This placement allows meals to be taken in a zone associated with receiving and gathering.

Pooja or meditation space: Northeast is ideal — the Ishan corner, associated with divine energy, wisdom, and the intersection of north and east.

Water Element Placement in a North Facing Home

Because north is the direction of water and Kubera, water elements — fountains, aquariums, water features — are particularly powerful in north facing homes when placed correctly.

The best zones for water features are: - Northeast: The intersection of north and east, associated with spiritual and material abundance. A small water fountain or aquarium in the northeast supports the flow of both spiritual insight and financial opportunity. - North: A water feature along the north wall activates Kubera's energy directly. - East: The east is also a positive zone for water, associated with the rising sun and new beginnings.

Avoid placing water features in: - South or southwest: Water here conflicts with the fire and earth energies of these zones and is associated with financial instability. - Southeast: The zone of Agni (fire); water here creates a direct elemental conflict. - Bedroom: Water features in bedrooms, regardless of direction, disturb sleep and create an environment of excessive movement and instability.

Kitchen Position and Common Mistakes

The kitchen in a north facing home is a frequent source of Vastu challenges. Because north and northeast are highly activated zones in these homes, there is a temptation to use these bright, open corners for everything — including the kitchen. This is one of the most common mistakes.

Why the northeast kitchen is problematic: The northeast is the zone of water and spiritual energy. Fire — represented by the stove and cooking activities — placed here creates an elemental conflict that, in Vastu thinking, can generate stress, health issues, and instability in the home. This does not mean the kitchen cannot be corrected if it is already in the northeast, but it does mean the placement warrants attention.

Corrective measures for a northeast kitchen: If you cannot change the kitchen's location, orient the cook to face east while cooking, place a small Vastu pyramid in the northeast corner of the kitchen to neutralise the elemental conflict, and avoid storing water in the southeast section of the kitchen itself.

The southeast kitchen: The ideal placement. The cook faces east, the fire of cooking aligns with the fire energy of the southeast, and the functional zone is in harmony with its elemental nature.

Common Mistakes in North Facing Homes

Despite their auspiciousness, north facing homes can be undermined by predictable errors:

Blocking the north: Heavy furniture, tall storage units, or a solid boundary wall along the north face restricts the flow of Kubera's energy into the home. The north should remain as open and unobstructed as possible.

Cluttering the northeast: The northeast corner should be the lightest, cleanest, most open corner of the home. Heavy furniture, toilets, or storage in the northeast suppresses the home's spiritual and intellectual energy.

Placing the master bedroom in the northeast: While northeast is excellent for meditation and study, it is not ideal for the master bedroom. Its light, open energy can interfere with deep rest and intimate connection.

Ignoring the southwest: The southwest is the zone of stability and earth. In any home, including north facing ones, the southwest should carry weight — through the master bedroom, heavy furniture, or storage. Neglecting this zone leads to a sense of instability or rootlessness.

Overhead beams: If your north facing home has overhead beams running east-west, ensure that the main seating and sleeping positions are not directly beneath them. Beams create a sense of pressure and suppression in the zones they cross.

Making the Most of Your North Facing Home

A well-configured north facing home is genuinely one of the most supportive environments Vastu recognises. To make the most of it:

  • Keep the north and northeast zones clean, light, and uncluttered.
  • Introduce a water feature in the north or northeast.
  • Use the north zone for activities that benefit from Kubera's influence — financial planning, studying, career-related work.
  • Ensure the southwest is grounded and stable.
  • Use shades of green, blue, and white in the north and northeast zones; earthy tones in the southwest.
